    1.

    Conclusion:

Christians who do not understand that God has already provided our righteousness through Jesus Christ as a free gift alone, will always go about the futile attempt to work their way into His grace through their own works, deeds, and abilities but in the end will always fall short.
  1. Text:   Eph 6:13-14

13    Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14    Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

  2. Theme:    Righteousness is a free gift from God that cannot be earned but must be received by faith.   But if God's people feel unworthy to receive His blessings or to come into His presence, they will fail to enter into all that God has provided and all He intended to make available to them.

  1. What the God kind of righteousness is not.

  1. Body:
    1. What is man's righteous state without God?

Rom 3:10-11
10    As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one;
11    There is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.    (NKJ)   vs. 10 Xref  Psalm 14

Isa 64:6
6    But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.   (NKJ)

Matt 5:20
20    "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.   (NKJ)

    1. What the God kind of righteousness is not.
  1. Righteousness in God is not something you can earn but is a free gift.

Rom 5:17
17    For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)   (NKJ)

Eph 2:8-9
8    For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9    not of works, lest anyone should boast.   (NKJ)

  1. Righteousness is not based on your works.

Phil 3:9
9    and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;  (NKJ)

Rom 10:2-5
2    For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.   (NKJ)
3    For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
4    For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
5    For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, "The man who does those things shall live by them."   (NKJ)    vs. 5 Xref    Lev 18:5

  1. God's Righteousness is not based on your feelings but faith in Christ redemptive work alone.

Rom 3:21-24
21    But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
22    even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
23    for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24    being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,   (NKJ)

  1. What is righteousness?
  1. Righteousness is God's way of doing and being right.

Ps 145:17
17    The LORD is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works.    (NKJ)

  1. Righteousness is a state of pure innocence before God, as if you had never sinned, allowing you to live without guilt or condemnation. This happens when Christ transfers his righteousness to you solely because of His love for you and His desire to redeem you from your fallen, sinful, unrighteous state that you have prior to being born again.

Rom 5:17
17    For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)   (NKJ)

  1. Righteousness our breastplate of protection

Eph 6:13-17
13    Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14    Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15    and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16    above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17    And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;   (NKJ)

  1. How does sin affect our righteousness?

God has declared us absolutely righteous.  However, when we sin, it makes us feel absolutely unrighteousness.  God's perspective of our righteousness in Christ, never changes.  Our perspective, however, may very well change, based on our actions or feelings when we sin.  God has given us the ability to "change our perspective and renew our mind" by standing in faith and confessing our sins, receive His forgiveness, and enjoy our right standing with Him again.  We must learn to walk by faith, not by our feelings if we want to enjoy this gift of righteousness.

I Jn 2:1
1    My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.    (NKJ)

    I Jn 1:9
9    If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   (NKJ)

  1. The enemies of righteousness.
  1. Demonic Condemnation.

James 4:7
7    Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.    (NKJ)

  1. Self Condemnation.

Rom 8:1
1    There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.    (NKJ)

  1. How do you increase and develop your righteousness?
  1. Righteousness is a state that God imputes to those who have accepted  Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  Because righteousness is a gift from God you do not need any more than what He provides for you when your are born again, but we must walk in this state of righteousness by faith and not by our senses or feelings.

Rom 10:10
10    For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.   (NKJ)

  1. You can develop and renew your mind to righteous thinking.

Phil 4:8
8    Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-- meditate on these things.   (NKJ)

  1. Why is righteousness so important to understand?
  1. Righteousness is a major part of our redemption that Christ paid for in His own blood.

1 Cor 1:30
30    But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.   (NKJ)

  1. God sees us the same way He sees Jesus, His only begotten Son,  righteous and loved.

John 17:22-23
22    "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
23    "I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.   (NKJ)
